This amazing story is about a girl named Audrey Driscoll. After the death of her parents, Audrey along with her younger sister Annabelle lives with her grandfather Edward Driscoll in San Francisco. Just like her father she always dreams of travelling the world, but couldn't make that wish accomplishes due to all those responsibilities she has.
At the age of 26, an incident turned her mundane life into an exciting one. She made a daring decision to travel alone and to live her dreams. She travels to Chicago, New York then she boards for Europe where she meets James and Violet Hawthorne who turn out be her best friends for life. James introduces Charles Parker-Scott, a travel writer and explorer to Audrey, both shares same travel interest and bitter past. They both fall in love with each other.
There are a lot of twists and turns in this novel. This story set during the time of Second World War when Hitler was coming into power and imposing strange laws. In this novel, Danielle Steel mentioned the Nuremberg Law, under this law, no Jews were allowed to have intercourse with Aryan nor they can marry Aryans and it will lead them to guilty for death. Due to this reason, Karl Rosen a Jew, friend of Audrey, who married to Ursula or Ushi Rosen an Aryan found guilty. What will happen next, that factor will keep you awake the whole night. The wanderlust of Audrey and the passion of photography takes her to Cairo from London, where Charles is doing his job of a war correspondent.
I like the way Danielle Steel portrays Audrey. She is independent, responsible and brave enough to take her life’s decisions.
